R.U.Nijmegen
Since the start of the Medical Faculty of Nijmegen University in 1951 ample attention has been paid to ethical, philosophical, and historical aspects of medical practice and medical research. Because of its catholic background Nijmegen University has always favoured a broad education of all students including teaching philosophy, ethics and other humanities. From the beginning on there were close relationships between the Medical Faculty and the Faculties of Philosophy and Theology. During many years three small departments were responsible for ethics, philosophy and history of medicine, respectively: (1) the Department of Ethics Related to Medicine, (2) the Department Philosophy of Medicine, and (3) the Institute for the History of Medicine (head: prof. dr. D. de Moulin). In 1991 these three departments were merged in one new department 'Ethics, Philosophy and History of Medicine'.
