Message from the dean
Dear visitor,
Welcome to the website of the Faculty of Medicine of the K.U.Leuven. Our faculty is embedded in a rich tradition dating back from 1425, foundation date of this university. During centuries, medicine and all related disciplines like dentistry, logopedics and phoniatrics, nursery and midwifery or the biomedical research have evolved tremendously. Especially during the last century the medical sciences have progressed in a drastic way. The members of our faculty, researchers, teachers and old students have contributed to this progress. I want to mention Andreas Vesalius, almost the most famous person in the history of our faculty, who can be named the father of anatomy. But still today, a lot of our researchers are pioneering in their research looking for new and better care and in the biomedical research. Many of them have built a national and international reputation.
The world is moving. The population is growing older, new diseases appear, new demands in healthcare by the patients, all these facts put pressure on the budget of our health care system. In this view, we educate in our faculty the future professionals who can deal with a changing environment. They get at our faculty the scientific basis to handle these and other evolutions in the future in a creative, critical and flexible way.
The close collaboration with the University Hospital and the presence of several researchcentres is a non neglectible feature we can offer them. It is the place students meet complex disease symptoms, learn to deal with the sensitiveness of patients and their family members and initiate their research careers. In this way, we prepare the next generation of medical doctors, dentists, nurses, midwives, biomedical researchers, speech therapists, audiologists, sexuologists and policy makers. On the website you will explore the diversity of specialisms, courses and research groups of our faculty.
I wish you a enjoyable surfing experience.
Prof. dr. Bernard Himpens,
Dean of the Faculty of Medicine
