Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences

The first and second phase of the Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences consist of a general, common programme. The third phase of the bachelor is more specific and focuses on your individual interests and strenghts. During this phase one can increase their knowledge by either choosing the optional courses on models and methods (eg morphological techniques, medical imaging and analysis, model systems) or the optional courses on molecular biology (eg oncobiology, human genetics, structural biology, microbiology and infections).

The fun thing about biomedical sciences is that you increasingly get more opportunities to discover things and to learn how to work independently when doing lab work.

Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences

After the Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences, the Faculty of Medicine offers the Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences. This master's programme immerses you in the scientific biomedical research domain. You will bring a significant contribution to current knowledge by doing research in a local or foreign laboratory.

The most important aspect of the Master's programme is the completion of a written report, the Master's thesis. All course units are strongly linked to research in laboratories, hospitals and the industry. Within the Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences you can choose between two majors: research in Biomedical Sciences and research, management and communication in Biomedical Sciences. Both have strong scientific influences, but the major research in Biomedical Sciences is highly specialized, while the major in research, management and communication aims for broader scientific research.

Biomedical Sciences appeals to me because the Bachelor's programme gives a general overview of the domain, after which the Master's programme offers you the opportunity to specialize in a specific field.

  • Research in Biomedical Sciences
This major is designed for those students who put their heart and soul in scientific research and wish to have a career as a scientist. Given that there are many research fields in Biomedical Sciences, a master student has the opportunity to choose from a wide selection of specialisations in several research fields such as human genetics, oncology (cancer), vascular biology, microbiology or immunology; domains in which there has also been a lot of innovative research the past years. Classes are taught by researchers 'in the field', which offers the opportunity to get closely involved with and to stay updated on the most recent research innovations and developments.

  • Research, management and communication in Biomedical Sciences
This major maintains a strong link with scientific research (the Master's thesis takes place in a research laboratory), but also stresses on the importance of a broad knowledge of biomedical sciences in society. Attention is drawn to communicative skills as personal interaction and for a broad, international public and gives insight in the domain of health care economy, management and patent law. The major is closely linked to the subject-specific teacher training.
