Methusalem financing

Today, every Flemish university has a number of research groups contributing substantially to the development of scientific knowledge and thus enjoying international recognition. However, these strongly depend upon project financing, meaning that the stability of such research groups is quite fragile, with the disappearance of financing often bringing about the premature end of research projects. By giving leading researchers a seven-year period of structural financing, the Methusalem programme offers a solution to this problem.

In 2007, Bart De Strooper was one of the four K.U.Leuven researchers who could count on structural financing for his research project “Neurodegenerative disorders, neuroprotective mechanisms and the aging brain”.

Methusalem Neurobiology and Angiogenesis Program Lecture Series

Bart De Strooper and Peter Carmeliet jointly organize a lecture series in the frame of the Methusalem financing which both received in 2007 for their research in the domain of  “Neurodegenerative disorders, neuroprotective mechanisms and the aging brain” and “Angiogenenis and the neuro-vascular link”.

Methusalem lectures aim to stimulate interaction among junior and senior researchers and to stimulate their integretation over different research departments. The lectures are directed to the faculty as well as to postdoctoral researchers and PhD students.

During the academic year 2008-2009, a first edition of this prestigious Methusalem Neurobiology and Angiongenesis Program Lecture series is organized. Internationally recognized top researchers in the domain of neurobiology and angiogenesis will be invited to share their expertise and to go into discussion with scientists from here.
